Dillon Beach surf guide

Dillon Beach is a beachbreak located a few miles west of Tomales along Dillon Beach Road. It’s known for its mellow vibe and offers surfers a pretty laid-back experience, though it can get crowded on sunny weekends with tourists joining in. Overall, the place sees less traffic compared to more popular spots like Salmon Creek and Point Reyes.

The surf here works best with swells coming from the West, WestSouthWest, and WestNorthWest, handling sizes from about 3 feet (0.9 meters) up to 6 feet (1.8 meters). The waves can come in both left and right, making it a versatile spot for different types of surfers. You’ll usually find the best conditions during mid to high tides. As for wind, the NorthNorthEast, NorthEast, and East directions are preferable. The bottom is sandy, which can make for fun rides when the waves aren't too big.

Access to Dillon Beach is pretty straightforward, and paddling out isn’t too bad even for beginners. The local surfer vibe is chill, as long as everyone is respectful. Sessions here are best from July to November, so plan your trips accordingly. Whether you’re on a shortboard or a funboard, Dillon Beach has its days where you can catch some decent waves.
