Salmon Creek is a well-known surf spot in the county, often drawing a good number of surfers looking for powerful beachbreaks. This spot offers waves that can really challenge your skills, resembling the expanse and consistency of San Francisco's Ocean Beach. Getting out beyond the break can be tough, but with some luck, you might spot a natural paddling channel when the conditions are right. Salmon Creek can handle solid swells, sometimes getting up to 10-12 feet (3-4 meters) at Buoy 13, though that doesn’t guarantee an easy paddle out.
The surf at Salmon Creek is primarily a beach break with waves coming in from the south, north, and occasionally from the west and northwest. The waves can range from about 4 to 10 feet (1.2 to 3 meters) and generally break to the left and right. The best times to surf are during high tide, but it can also work during low and mid tide. It's a spot more suited for intermediate and expert surfers because of the heavy waves and notorious currents. If you're used to riding challenging beachbreaks, this is a place you'll appreciate.
Accessing Salmon Creek is pretty simple. You can take Bean Avenue off Highway 1 all the way to the end, or go to the North Salmon Creek Beach parking lot, located just a mile north of Bodega Bay. Once you’re down on the beach, there are often less crowded peaks if you’re up for a little walk. The atmosphere here is mostly friendly, although you might meet some grumpy fishermen or divers from time to time. There have been some shark sightings in the area, so just be aware of your surroundings.
