Flakstad is located on Flakstadøy and faces northwest, which gives it some protection from southwest swells. The beach is wide and offers various peaks, making it a decent spot for surfers looking to catch some waves. The atmosphere is relaxed, and there’s a nice campground situated just behind the beach, providing a good base for those wanting to stay close to the surf.
The surf here is best with northwest swell direction but can also handle swells coming from the west and north. It works well with swell sizes starting from 1ft (0.3m) and breaks over sand, offering beach waves that can be both left and right. The spot is friendly for beginners, especially when the conditions are right. For the best experience, southeast winds are preferable, and you can surf during low, mid, or high tide. If you're looking for a chill surf session, Flakstad can serve up some fun waves.
Just to the north lies Vikten, which is similar but tends to be more exposed to the wind and surrounded by boulder reefs. Flakstad's setup gives you a bit more protection, so it might be the better choice if you want to avoid the harsher conditions found at Vikten.
