Honomanu Bay is located about twenty miles east of Ho'okipa on the Road to Hana, nestled into the beautiful sea cliffs of northeast Maui. The spot is somewhat secluded, which can be a plus for surfers looking for less crowded waves. The main surf area is on the rocky western shore, which faces directly east, making it an interesting spot for various swell directions.
The waves here can get pretty fun, with the main left-hander offering long, peeling rides. This wave works best with south to southwest winds, and it typically holds size from head high to 2X overhead. On the east side of the bay, there’s a right-hander that is more sheltered from the trade winds, but its quality really relies on the swell direction. For a solid session, expect to handle swells from the NW to ENE, with sizes ranging from about 1.5 meters (5 ft) to 3 meters (10 ft). The bottom is mainly made up of rock and reef, creating a point break that can provide longer rides but also requires a good paddle back.
Access to the bay can be tricky depending on the road conditions, so make sure to check that out before heading in. The crowd factor is usually low, so you might have the waves mostly to yourself. The local vibe appreciates humility and respect, so keep that in mind. It's best to visit during the winter months when the surf is at its peak. While summer tradeswell can be okay, it often has onshore conditions. Remember to be cautious of strong currents in winter, and enjoy your time at Honomanu Bay!
