Located off Makena Road in the quiet countryside of the Makena Coast, Dumps is a well-known left-hand reef point break on Maui's southern corner. The spot features a large parking lot for easy access. The environment here is pretty pristine, making it a nice place to hang out when you're not in the water. Crowds can vary from light to moderate depending on the day and the swell, so it can be hit or miss when it comes to sharing the waves.
Dumps works best on south to south-southwest swells. The waves can range from around 5 feet (1.5 meters) to 12 feet (3.6 meters) when conditions are right, especially on larger days. When the swell picks up, the break gets fast and can deliver some nice barrel sections, but on smaller swells, it slows down and can feel a bit fat. Paddling out can be a workout since itβs a point break, which means you'll be catching longer rides but also facing a longer paddle back out. The bottom consists of reef, rock, and lava, so surfers should be cautious, especially during lower tides. The preferred winds come from the north-north-east to south-south-east, providing good surf conditions.
This spot is suitable for intermediate to expert surfers looking to ride shortboards, funboards, longboards, fish, or even just bodyboards. Dumps sees most action during the summer and spring seasons, with autumn also offering decent conditions. Just be aware that when the wind kicks up, it can make surfing here a bit tricky.
