Johanna is a surf spot located on the western side of Cape Otway. It’s known for picking up a lot of swell, which makes it a reliable option when it’s flat around Torquay. The beach features a mix of sand and some uneven reef, and it can get quite crowded during the summer months as surfers from Torquay flock to the area. Keep in mind that this spot can change quickly and dramatically in terms of wave size.
This beach break can handle swell sizes starting from 2 feet (0.6 meters) and works best with south and west swell directions. Waves typically break to the left and right, but the currents can get pretty strong, especially when the swell gets head high. A good paddle out is essential, as rips create channels that help navigate through the water, but be aware that the central peaks can be wild and inconsistent with wind and swell. Low to mid tide is usually better, but it still works at high tide.
For those looking to camp, there's a decent campsite right behind the beach. Johanna is also a backup spot for the Bells comp if there are issues with the main event venue. Overall, Johanna is suited for intermediate surfers who want to challenge themselves in punchy waves and changing conditions.
