La Meurthe is a surf spot located on the west side of the island, part of a barrier reef that stretches for about 6km (4mi). This area encloses a stunning lagoon and features several passages that provide access to various surf breaks. To get to La Meurthe, surfers can paddle out from Dawson’s Point or Old Settlement Beach. The spot is named after a nearby shipwreck, and offers a decent option for those looking to score some waves.
La Meurthe offers a long, fast, and hollow left-hander that works best with a southwest swell (optimal direction) and northeast winds. It generally handles swell sizes starting at about 3ft (1 meter), making it suitable for more experienced surfers. While it’s mainly a left wave, the other side of the North Passage has a rideable right too. For the best conditions, head out during mid to high tide, as this is when the waves tend to break well over the live coral.
While surfing here, keep in mind that the currents can be tricky, and you'll probably need to watch out for sea urchins more than sharks. It’s a spot that calls for expert skills, so be prepared to put in your best effort if you're heading out to La Meurthe.
