Melvich is a surf spot located at the eastern end of a dune-backed bay in Sutherland. It features a tannin brown river that feeds into the sea, creating a sandbar that sits on a mix of rocky patches. It’s often quieter than many other spots and can be a nice getaway, especially outside of peak season. Access is easy, with parking available just behind the dunes or near the Bighouse, and it's a short walk to the beach.
The waves at Melvich can be decent, typically breaking from around 2ft (0.6m) to about 6ft (1.8m). You’ll find mainly right-hand waves, along with some shorter lefts. The best time to surf here is during high tide, especially with a swell from the northwest. The bottom is a mix of sand and rocky patches, adding some challenge. The spot is generally suited for intermediate surfers but there are different peaks along the beach for various skill levels. Keep in mind that you might encounter strong rips, especially when the tide drops.
During Autumn, from September to November, Melvich can really deliver some fun waves, thanks to clean swells and preferable south winds. It's great for a variety of board types, including shortboards, fish, longboards, and bodyboards. If you’re looking for a spot with some quality waves and fewer crowds, Melvich is worth checking out.
