Brimms Ness - The Cove surf guide

Surf: Brimms Ness Cove will be the shorter, peaky right between the Point and the Bowl. Can really lurch over the Caithness flagstone reef at low tide then relents to allow a few hacks before fizzling out in the channel. Mid tide safest and hopefully not too much W in the wind. Directions: Parking either in the farmyard or out on the point depending on the state of the track and the goodwill of the landowner. Drive into and out of the area slowly as the residents are sick of speeding surfers. Environment: Parking either in the farmyard or out on the point depending on the state of the track and the goodwill of the landowner. Drive into and out of the area slowly as the residents are sick of speeding surfers. Surf: General: If there is no surf at Brims Ness, there's no surf anywhere on the north coast. It's not by chance that the seafaring Vikings named this low lying headland Surf Point. The reef here sucks up any passing swell from the deep Atlantic waters, before spitting it back out onto the shallow, slate shelf to form the super fast, barreling right known as The Bowl. With a small takeoff zone, it only takes a few people to make a crowd. Looking seaward, to the right sits The Cove, a less critical but still shallow right-hander, which allows time for a couple of maneuvers before easing into a channel. Further right still, The Point delivers long walling lefts that hold larger swells and can be excellent, if heavy. Access is through private land with parking in a farmyard. Please park respectfully. Tides: Best on a 1/4 to 3/4 incoming tide. Size: Waist high to head and a half. Wind: S Swell: NW Bottom: Shallow slab-stone Rock. Paddling: Easy on the reefs, Point can be hard work. Spot Rating: Mostly checked when small, but in bigger swells can be excellent - if intimidating. Exposed to winds. Access: Park in farm yard respectfully. Access relies on goodwill of farmer and has been revoked before due to incidents with surfers causing damage. Crowds: Crowd Factor: Small crowds. Local Vibe: Tiny take off spot so bring good vibes. Environment: Clean. Hazards: Hitting the bottom, heavy when big, rips and angry nesting turns. Season: June - November.
