Morro das Pedras surf guide
Surf: Reliable righthanders break at the S end of Morro das Pedras in SE groundswell. There's an E swell, W wind, all tides, lefthand point off the northern rocks of Armacao called Caldeirão. Further round the long beach heading south, Armacao has plenty of consistent peaks, where fast, often hollow waves will offer uncrowded rides compared to Matadeiro.
Environment: Hard to escape the crowds on the island, but at least there is some room to move around here.
Surf: General: Follow the road south from Campeche as it hugs the shoreline and you'll come to the headland of Morro das Pedras (Hill of Stones). It's a wide-open beachbreak that can have several peaks up and down it, especially in front of the hotel. At the south end of the beach is a headland where sand builds up and creates banks that favor rights. On its best days it can be almost point-like and zip along with hollow sections. The locals are on it when conditions are firing, but it can be a very good wave. The beach itself is called Morro das Pedras, with different names for the various peaks, but the right-handers at the south end are generally the best. Try continuing on to the next beach south as well, another super-consistent beachbreak known as Caldierao.
Tides: Medium tides
Size: Waist high to a few feets overhead
Wind: Calm or offshore from the W to NW.
Swell: S, to get the wrapping walls on the rights
Bottom: Sand.
Paddling: The paddle is not bad for smaller days, but becomes more the larger it gets.
Spot Rating: It is a very consistent, hollow and powerful wave. With a well-formed bottom can break long rights, coming from behind the rock to the sand.
Access: Easy to find.
Crowds: Crowd Factor: The crowd spreads out over several peaks.
Local Vibe: Not too bad.
Environment: Fairly clean for the most part.
Hazards: Sometimes the waves closeout hard when they get close to the beach.
Season: Fall and winter are best, but breaks year-round.
