Mount Irvine is a surf spot located off a beach that’s well-known for being family-friendly and for good snorkeling. This place has a righthand reef break that starts down the headland on the northern side of the bay. The wave is fast and racy, with some sections where you can find nice pits to ride and lips to float on as it peels along the colorful live coral. The best swells usually come from the North and Northeast, especially during the November to April period, making it a go-to spot for surfers looking for some action.
The waves at Mount Irvine are mostly reliable for intermediate surfers. The surf handles sizes starting from about 2 feet (0.6 meters) and can get pretty exciting. It’s important to note that the paddle out can be long, and the spot can get crowded when the waves are good. The ideal conditions are with a southeast wind, and it works at low, mid, and high tide. If you’re looking for some variety, there's also a left wave further down the reef, especially when the swells are at their peak.
When it comes to accessing the surf, many locals dive off the rocks, but your safest bet is to paddle out from the middle of the bay. During summer, the waves tend to be dead flat, but you can usually count on consistency during the winter months. Just keep in mind that the local crew is quite heavy, so be prepared to share the waves.
