Nazare surf guide

Nazare is a famous surf spot on the coast of Portugal, known for its gigantic waves and stunning scenery. It became a must-visit place for big wave surfers after Garrett MacNamara rode a record-setting wave back in 2011. Located near the town of Nazaré, it attracts both tourists and surfers from all over the world. The spot showcases some of the biggest swells, especially during the winter months, making it a highlight for those looking to test their skills against nature's power.

The surf varies a lot depending on the swell size and direction, with waves that range from around 1.2 meters (4 feet) to massive 3.6 meters (12 feet). The best swells come from the West to NorthWest (WNW), which can create some stunning and heavy waves over the sand bottom. Although the spot offers rights and lefts, it’s mainly known for its heavy beach breaks that can throw experts into some serious barrels. During the mid incoming tide, conditions are often ideal. Light to moderate winds from the East and Southeast help to create better waves, but it can still get tricky because of the shallow bars close to shore and the deep waters further out.

When it comes to riding out, you’ll want to be an expert as it’s one of the more challenging spots due to its lack of a safe channel. Paddling out can be tough, especially on the bigger days. If you're just looking for a smaller wave, you can paddle out at Praia do Norte. The swell season generally runs from October to March, so plan your trip accordingly if you want to catch the big waves, but keep in mind the water gets colder as winter progresses. You'll see a mix of local surfers and tow crews on the biggest days, but on smaller days, the crowd is more manageable. Just make sure you're prepared for the adrenaline rush that comes with surfing at Nazare!
