Sables d’Or is a popular surf spot that attracts surfers of different skill levels, especially intermediates. Located in a vibrant area, it offers good access to the beach and surf conditions. This spot can get a bit crowded during the summer, so it's usually better to hit it outside that season.
The surf here handles swell sizes starting from 1 ft (0.3 m) and can offer decent waves with optimal swell direction coming from the Northwest. Depending on the swell angle, you can find longer right-hand waves or hollower lefts that can produce powerful tubes on the better days. The waves break over sand, which means it tends to be a bit easier to navigate when the swell picks up, especially with the help of the jetty rip currents that can make getting out easier. It works well at all tide heights—low, mid, and high—but is particularly favorable during those times. Winds coming from the east are preferred for the best conditions.
Aside from the surf, keep in mind that the beach has a swimming area monitored by lifeguards along the right jetty in the summer, which can limit how much space is available for surfing. If you're planning a trip, it’s wise to check the conditions beforehand, as the crowd and wave quality can change quickly.
