Tarpits surf guide

Located at the south end of Carpinteria State Beach, Tarpits is a beach and reef break that can be pretty unpredictable. It tends to work best during the rainy season when the sand shifts due to the small rivermouth to the south. The uneven reef to the south can sometimes offer decent lefts when there’s a solid south swell rolling in. Overall, it’s a spot that might not always give you great waves but can surprise you when the conditions line up just right.

The surf here generally handles swell sizes from about 3 to 6 feet (1 to 2 meters). It works best with swells coming from the South, SouthEast, WestSouthWest, and West. Expect mostly beach and reef waves breaking both left and right, which can be fun for surfers at all levels, from beginners to experts. The tides that work best are mid to high, and the ideal wind directions are NorthNorthWest, North, and NorthEast. When everything is in sync, Tarpits can provide a good ride, but it also has its semi-closeout moments, so don't get your hopes too high.

Accessing Tarpits is pretty straightforward. You’ll find a hole in the fence for locals, but if you’re just visiting, follow the signs for Carpinteria State Beach, pay the eight bucks, and park right in front of the break. Be aware that the crowd factor can be a bit high, as it's a popular spot among locals. So, if you're planning to surf here, it’s good to be prepared for a little competition. The bottom is a mix of sand and rock, so keep an eye on your board as loose surfboards can be a hazard in the area.
