Three Bears is a surf spot known for its series of reef peaks that cater to various surf conditions. It's located in a somewhat isolated area, which means it can get pretty crowded, especially on smaller, more inviting days during summer. Accessing the spot requires navigating a rough 4WD track, so be prepared for that if you're planning to hit the waves.
The surf at Three Bears is quite versatile. The best swell direction is from the SouthWest, but it can also work with South and NorthWest swells. Waves typically start working around 3ft (about 0.9 meters) and can get pretty powerful, especially on the heavier sets. Papa, the furthest out, can handle triple overhead plus, while Mama is known for producing tasty barrels on medium-sized SW swells. Baby's may not always be the smallest, as it can deliver some nice spiraling lefts and decent rights during small to moderate SW-W swells. The waves generally break over an uneven reef and some sand, so keep your eyes peeled.
For the best experience, aim to hit the spot with an east wind and at any tide height—low, mid, or high—works well here. This spot is best suited for intermediate surfers, as the conditions can get tricky with the sharp reef and occasional hold-downs on bigger days. Be ready for some fun, but also remember to respect the ocean!
