Treachery is a beach break located on the NSW coast that’s known for its consistency. It lives up to its name with powerful waves and some hefty rips occasionally pulling through, plus there have been sightings of large sharks in the area. The summer NE breezes are offshore, and the swell usually ends up a couple of feet bigger than other local spots. It’s not the friendliest spot for beginners, especially when it gets crowded during holidays or busy weekends.
The best swell direction for Treachery is from the southeast, but it can handle swells coming from the northeast and south as well. It's capable of breaking waves at sizes starting from 1ft (about 0.3m) and can manage much larger sets too. The waves come in both lefts and rights, and there’s a paddling channel at the northern peak, though you should expect to get tossed around a bit if you’re not careful. The break works over sand, and it can really barrel on the outside and inside when conditions are right. For the best experience, low, mid, or high tide works well, but just keep in mind that things can change with the tide.
If you feel like exploring, there are some reefs further south that can offer a different wave experience. Treachery certainly gives surfers something to challenge their skills, but make sure you're prepared for the spot's power and the crowd dynamics.
