Wooden Jetties is a surf spot located in the Holgate Wildlife Reserve on the southern tip of Long Beach Island (L.B.I.). This place has a slight bend in the coast that allows it to hold some of the biggest north-east swells around. It’s a popular spot among surfers, but it’s important to note that it can vary in quality depending on the conditions.
The spot mainly breaks left and is best when the swell is coming from the north-east. You'll find that it can handle swell sizes of about 2 feet (0.6 meters) and higher. The waves tend to break over sand, which is a bit more forgiving for those wiping out. Low, mid, and high tides will all work here, but many prefer to surf at mid tide for the best results. The winds from the north-west are ideal, and this spot is mostly suitable for intermediate surfers, given the nature of the waves and possible currents.
There’s a big slab of steel submerged on the inside, and severe currents can be a challenge, so it's wise to be aware of your surroundings. Additionally, pay-to-park is required in the summer, but no tags are needed. Just a heads-up to plan accordingly!
