Bell Block surf guide

Bell Block is a surf spot located just a bit outside New Plymouth, New Zealand. This area features a combination of a reef break and a beach break, making it versatile for different surfers. The more serious surfers usually head out to the reef, while beginners tend to stick to the beach break, especially when the tide is right. The local scene is active, and you’ll find a mix of surfers at different skill levels enjoying the waves here.

The reef at Bell Block works best with a southwest swell, and it can handle swells up to about 6 feet (1.8 meters). The waves break left over uneven reef, creating some powerful rides, but it's definitely a place where you need expert skills to navigate safely. The best conditions come when the wind is also coming from the south and during low tide. So, if you’re planning to hit the reef, make sure you've got the skillset to take on those powerful waves.

When you're surfing here, be prepared for a strong local vibe; the guys out in the water know their stuff, so it’s best to respectfully share the waves and keep things friendly. If you're going to stick to the beach break as a beginner, you'll find it more user-friendly, especially at mid tide before it gets too high. Just make sure to pick your time wisely to enjoy the best conditions!
