Bog Works surf guide

Bog Works is a surf spot located just outside New Plymouth, popular among more experienced surfers. It features a big swell offshore peak that can provide some decent rides, especially when conditions are right. The area has a bit of rugged beauty, making it a nice spot to take a break and enjoy the waves.

The waves at Bog Works are known for their long walls, which are best suited for expert surfers. The optimal swell direction here is from the west, but you can still catch some good rides with south-west and north swells. The spot handles swell sizes of about 4ft (1.2m) well, breaking over uneven reef. Depending on the swell direction, you’ll find both lefts and rights available, with low tide being the best time to hit the water. For your best chances, look for south-east winds to set up the right conditions.

When you head out to surf at Bog Works, it's essential to keep in mind that this spot is recommended for those with a solid level of experience. Make sure you're comfortable with reef breaks, as the uneven surface can present challenges. Parking is available near Mount Bryan Reserve, and from there, you can easily find the steps down to the beach.
