Fitzroy Beach is located in the town of New Plymouth and is one of the key beaches in the area. This beach is pretty sheltered by the surrounding harbour and headland, which means it usually doesn't get hit too hard by big swells or strong winds. It's a decent spot for a day out on the waves whether you're just starting out or looking for something a bit more challenging.
The surf here can be quite fun, especially when the swell is coming from the SouthWest or North. It handles swell sizes starting at around 1ft (0.3 meters) and can bring some solid waves as it breaks over the sand. You can expect beach breaks with left and right waves, making it a nice spot for both directions. Low, mid, and high tides all work well here, but many surfers prefer to hit it during low tide for a bit more action. When the wind is coming from the SouthEast, conditions improve, bringing in those nice, clean waves. Beginners can enjoy the spot too, especially when the swell is on the smaller side.
There's a good local surfing community here, with plenty of surfers connected to the New Plymouth Surfriders club. The environment is friendly, and the city campsite right on the foreshore is a plus if you're looking to stay close to the beach. With all facilities around, it’s a chill spot to surf and relax.
