Fitzroy Beach surf guide
Surf: In the town of New Plymouth, Fitzroy Beach shelters behind the harbour and headland so a big swell and strong winds rarely phase it. Becomes a classic beachbreak that has proper low tide barrels with sharp drops and tidy peaks all the way to the rivermouth groyne. Any S wind OK and handles the juice, so advance surfers only when it gets overhead.
Directions: Fitzroy is one of the main beaches at New Plymouth. From New Plymouth centre make your way towards the water front, turn off Devon Street onto either Beach Street or nobs Line down to the beach.
Environment: Great city campsite right on the foreshore and plenty of locals attached to the New Plymouth Surfriders club. All facilities.
