Cabo Corrientes is known for its pointbreaks and has a reputation for being one of the better surf spots in Argentina. Located near Mar del Plata, it faces northeast which helps manage some wind conditions. However, the wave quality took a hit with the construction of a jetty that disrupts the natural break. Though it doesn’t work all the time, when the right conditions come together, it has potential for solid surf.
The wave typically breaks right and requires southeast swells in the 4ft to 10ft (1.2m to 3m) range to properly work. The optimal swell direction is east, but northeast swells can be ridden too. When the swell hits, you can find yourself enjoying long sections perfect for cutbacks. The best time to surf here is during low and mid to high tides. If you paddle out when it's pumping, be prepared for quite a workout, but on average days, it's not too bad. This spot can be a good option for both beginners and more experienced surfers depending on the conditions, as it accommodates various board types including shortboards, funboards, longboards, and fish.
Access is straightforward; you can park right in front of the wave near the beach. Be aware that crowds can build up, especially in warmer weather, so expect some company in the water. While the local vibe is generally good, it’s wise to keep an eye on your belongings near the rocks. Overall, Cabo Corrientes can be hit or miss, but it does have its moments worth checking out.
