Cowries is a surf spot that’s known for its grinding right-hand waves. It's located over a shallow shelf which can be pretty tricky, especially for less experienced surfers. This spot can get quite crowded, particularly when there’s a good swell, and the locals are usually out in force, so be prepared for some competition during peak times.
The waves here are best when the swells are coming from the east, specifically with optimal conditions from the northeast and southeast. Cowries handles swell sizes around 3ft (about 1 meter), and it tends to break over rock ledges. The preferred wind direction is from the southwest, and you can surf it during low, mid, or even high tide. However, this spot is really suited for expert surfers, given the challenges presented by the take-off zone and the shallow reef.
If you’re looking for more options nearby, head to the next headland south where you’ll find Pools rights and Shatters lefts, both offering their own set of challenges. To the north, Barrack Headland's Mini Pipe serves up lefts that pack a punch with intensity and hollowness, especially during northeast to east swells.
