Le Borgne surf guide

Surf: Le Borgne is a right reefbreak/rivermouth, close to Pointe Boeuf, that can peel down the line for a long way and give some E wind protection. There are tapering rights and also short playful lefts in oily, diesel blue water. There is also a shallow left on the east side of town that could be tackled on a big NE swell, but is suicidal in most conditions. Directions: Paddle across the rivermouth from town or take the short ferryboat. Environment: Le Borgne is decorated in old colonial architecture, reminiscent of Cap Haitien, with rickety doorways and peeling paint. There are a couple of hotels, including La Perle. The locals speak Creole with a Cuban twist. It was once only accessed by boat, but now has an excellent new road to the E. To head further W and explore more spots before NE swells get sheltered by the fabled pirate’s hide-out Turtle Island (Ile de La Tortuga), either take the 4WD mountain pass, or the paved inland route from Cap Haitien to Plaisance to Port de Paix. The mountain pass cannot be tackled in the rain due to the narrow, steep and muddy passage. With a confident off road driver and a good 4WD, the route is a cliffhanger.
