Mad River Beach surf guide

Mad River Beach is located along the Northern California coast. It's known for its long stretches of sandy shoreline and can be a bit of an overlooked spot for surfers. The beach can feel pretty wild with some currents, and it definitely has its own unique vibe. As it often gets less attention than other popular spots, you'll find that it’s not always crowded, which can be nice for surfers looking for a bit more space to ride the waves.

The surf at Mad River Beach can be quite variable. It works well with west swell and can handle wave sizes from around 1 ft. (0.3 m) and up. You can find both left and right breaking waves over sand. For the best conditions, mid to high tide is preferred, and a southeast wind will make things cleaner. Keep in mind, though, that this spot is better suited for intermediate surfers, as the winter can bring in some massive barrels, along with wicked currents and rip tides that can make things tricky.

Aside from surfing, it’s a good idea to pay attention to the weather and tide changes if you plan to hit the waves. The beach's natural beauty can be a nice backdrop when you’re gearing up, and since it doesn't get as much traffic as other spots, there's a chance to enjoy surf sessions with a bit more solitude. Just be ready for some challenging conditions, especially in winter!
