Trinidad State Beach is located near the small town of Trinidad. It’s known for its rocky beachbreak and offers some scenic views. While it might not be the top surf destination, it has its own charm and is worth checking out if you’re in the area.
The surf here can be described as funky, with a mix of beach breaks and reef setups. The waves generally break both left and right, and it’s best during peaky swells. When you're looking to ride, the optimal swell direction is from the west, but it can also handle swells coming from the south and north. You can catch rideable waves at around 1 ft (0.3 m), but be prepared for some uneven conditions due to the rocky bottom. Overall, intermediate surfers will find it manageable, especially when the tide is low, and the wind comes from the east.
If the NW wind picks up, College Cove is a good alternative spot. It can be sheltered and becomes more fun to surf when bigger swells hit, but expect more dumpy closeouts in that bay. So, if you’re looking to escape the wind and find some rideable waves, it’s worth a look then!
