Papagayo is a well-known surf spot located right in the heart of Quintero. It's a quirky left reef break that stands out as one of the few true reef breaks in central Chile. Since it’s not sheltered by any headlands or points, it can react pretty sensitively to the wind. Swells come in from the West, Southwest, or Northwest, stacking up on the outer reef before winding into some speedy sections that can tube up nicely when the conditions align. Just keep in mind that there's a convenient paddling channel alongside the break, but when the waves are huge—especially in winter—it can be a workout to get out. Parking is available on the cliff above the beach, but be cautious about your belongings since you can't see your car from the water.
Papagayo can handle swell sizes from about 5 to 10 feet (1.5 to 3 meters) and works best with low to mid tides. The waves break over a rock reef, so be prepared for some impact if you wipe out. Ideal conditions usually happen with winds coming from the East or Southeast, and this spot is mostly suited for intermediate to expert surfers. If you're riding the waves here, shortboards and guns are your best bet. Expect some crowds, so if things get a little tight, just stay mellow and enjoy the ride.
During the autumn months, specifically from March to May, Papagayo sees some solid action. Not only can it get good, but you also want to keep an eye on the wind, as the break lacks the natural protection of a headland. With a bit of patience and the right conditions, you can score some fun sessions here.
