Ritoque is a well-known surf spot in Chile, recognized as the birthplace of Chilean surfing. Located about half an hour from the cities of Viña del Mar and Valparaíso, it’s a south-facing sandy cove that attracts surfers looking for a variety of waves. The area can get a bit crowded, especially on weekends during the summer, but it’s a casual place to spend a surf session or an afternoon by the beach.
The surf at Ritoque offers beach breaks that can be fun, especially during the winter months. The optimal swell direction is from the southwest, with wave sizes typically ranging from around 3 to 6 feet (1 to 2 meters). You can catch soft lefts that lead into a paddling channel, which makes it easy to get out back. The right side is also worth a try, although it might not be as powerful as it appears. For beginners, the waves can sometimes be mellow and allow for some basic maneuvers. Paddling isn’t too bad, making it accessible for various skill levels. Just keep in mind that the surf can get bigger as you head south down the beach, and there aren’t many channels there.
Access to the spot is easy, with a sandy lot right near the beach. In terms of gear, you can ride shortboards, funboards, longboards, fish, or even bodyboards here. While Ritoque isn’t the premier destination for surfers looking to travel to Chile, it still holds its charm and offers some enjoyable sessions for those nearby. Definitely a spot worth checking out if you’re in the area!
