Peaks surf guide

Peaks is a surf spot that offers a unique experience tucked away among rocky outcrops. It features one of the longest single section points in New Zealand. The paddle-out can be tricky, so it's best suited for those with some experience. The scenery is quite nice, but don't expect a super chill vibe here. It's more for surfers looking to push their limits than for beginners hoping to catch some easy waves.

The surf at Peaks can be pretty exciting when conditions align. The optimal swell direction is from the SouthWest, which, along with West swells, can create some solid waves. It handles swell sizes starting from around 2 feet (0.6 meters) and can break over uneven reef and sand. You can expect point breaks with left waves being the norm here. For the best results, aim for low to mid tide, and if you can, catch it when the wind is coming from the South. It’s definitely more suited for expert surfers due to the challenging nature of the waves and take-off.

For those keen on pushing their skills, Peaks is also a place where the full-speed, wailing walls can offer hollow pockets and tricky sections. Be prepared for a bit of a workout, especially if you're trying to make it the full kilometer back to the beach. If you're less experienced, consider riding the sweep down to find easier entry points where you can enjoy the surf without getting into trouble.
