More about Waipiro Bay surfspot

Waipiro is the place to be when moderate NE or strong SE swells awaken the clutch of pointbreaks at the S end of this massive bay. Kitties is the inside section closer to the beach, while Frog Rock is shorter, faster and ends abruptly on the rocks. Outside is Creek, a fast hollow beast best left to experienced surfers. The beachbreaks are above average standard and there are rocky outcrops at the north end that hold more waves.

From Gisborne head east on Wainui Road State Highway 35. Continue north to Te Puia Springs then turn right onto Waipiro Road, down to Waipiro Road. Coming into Waipiro Bay turn right onto Waikawa Road to reach the south end of the beach. You can find a spot anywhere along Waipiro Bay.

A significant swell and higher tides will make the trek worthwhile, just take care on the steep gravel road in.
