Cook's Point surf guide

Cook's Point is a surf spot located near Tolaga Bay, perfect for those looking to catch some waves in a less crowded environment. The area requires a bit of a hike to access, as it's about a 25-minute walk along the Cook's Cove track from the parking area at the end of Wharf Road. While it can be a bit of a trek, reaching this spot can be rewarding for those willing to make the effort.

This right point break works best on low to mid tide and is ideal when the swell is coming from the east. It can handle wave sizes starting at about 2 feet (0.6 meters) and is known to handle swells from the northeast and south as well. The waves break over boulders and sand, providing a decent ride for experts only. Keep in mind that the best wind direction for waves here is from the south, so check the conditions before you head out!

In addition to Cook's Point, the area has other reef breaks around Mitre Rocks and Pourewa Island, but those are not for the faint-hearted and are suited for expert surfers due to their difficulty. You might find lower consistency and less crowded waves out here compared to more popular spots, which can make for a better experience if youโ€™re looking for something a bit quieter.
