Baixa de Viola is a surf spot located east of the town of Maia. It features a serious big wave peak that attracts experienced surfers looking for a challenge. The access is straightforward thanks to a new concrete road leading to a parking area. While it's not usually crowded, it's not a spot for solo surfers due to the strong conditions.
This spot can handle swell sizes up to about 3 meters (10 ft) and works best with north-west and north-east swells. Waves break over an uneven reef, and you'll find both left and right breaks here. The tide is pretty flexible, as it can work during low, mid, and high tides. However, this place is more suited for expert surfers; the waves can get powerful and tricky, especially with strong rip currents and big rocks around. Winds from the south are preferable for the best conditions.
Medium consistency is expected, so don't expect perfect conditions every time you visit. It's a solid option if you're looking for something more intense, just make sure you're up for the challenge and plan your trips around the right swell and wind conditions.
