Benete is located just 5km down the coast from a major containership terminal and port, which tells you a bit about how sheltered this deep bay is. The spot is known for its left-breaking waves that form over a shallow reef beneath cliffs. While it’s not the most consistent place due to the effects of east trade winds, it can produce decent waves when the conditions are right, especially with some south or southwest swells. Surfers should be aware that it’s mainly surfable at high tide.
The optimal swell direction for Benete is from the Southwest, and it can handle swell sizes starting around 3 feet (about 1 meter). The waves are mainly lefts, breaking over live coral. The best conditions are found when the wind is coming from the south and when it’s at high tide. Keep in mind that this spot is better suited for expert surfers because of its sometimes challenging conditions and the potential for closing out waves.
Given its location and the surrounding geography, it’s important to be mindful of the currents and shifting peaks. Experienced surfers will find the wave quality pretty rewarding when everything aligns. Just make sure you’re ready to navigate the shallow areas, especially if you get caught inside!
