Scar Reef is the main surf spot in West Sumbawa, known for its challenging waves and sharp reef. It's a hotspot primarily for advanced surfers who are looking to take on some serious risks. With multiple barrel opportunities, this place is definitely not for beginners. The vibe here is laid-back, but don’t underestimate the power of the waves.
When the conditions line up, Scar Reef can dish out some solid waves. The optimal swell direction is from the SouthWest, though it can also take swells coming from the South. This spot handles swell sizes starting at 3 ft (about 1 meter) and can handle much bigger days, often bringing in powerful waves that can exceed double overhead. Expect left-breaking reef waves that can change personality from perfect mid-tide bowls to fast sloping walls as the tide rises. The wind usually blows from the SouthEast, which is ideal for maintaining good shape on the waves.
Scar Reef is best surfed during low to mid and even high tide, giving it some flexibility depending on the day. Keep in mind that this reef is not forgiving, so it's really suited for expert surfers only. Be prepared for a quick take-off as the waves can throw a solid lip, and you’ll need to be on your game to navigate the backdoor sections and the closeout that follows.
