Awang is a surf spot located not too far from Kuta, specifically at the end of the road in the east-facing village of Ampang. This spot is pretty unique because it requires a special mix of S-SE swell and W wind for it to really work. When the conditions line up just right, surfers can enjoy some fun waves here.
The waves at Awang break mainly to the right over a shallow LiveCoral reef. It handles swell sizes starting at around 2ft (about 0.6 meters) and can provide some decent long bowling rights. Ideal swell direction is Southeast, but it can also work well with South swells. To get the best from this spot, aim for the mid to high tide. Just a heads up, it’s perfect for intermediate surfers who are looking for a bit of a challenge.
When surfing at Awang, pay attention to the wind direction—West winds are preferred. If you catch it on a good day, you might even find some nice tubes to ride. Just be prepared for the shallow coral underneath, and remember to enjoy the vibe of this less crowded spot.
