Cadiz surf guide

Cadiz is a popular surf spot located at Playa de Santa Maria del Mar. The beach is situated between two rocky groynes which help to hold the sand and create some structure in the waves. It's a small beach that attracts a serious crew of surfers, so expect a competitive atmosphere. While it can provide some fun surf days, it’s not always a guaranteed classic spot.

The waves here can get short and intense, offering lefts and rights that are best for intermediate surfers. The ideal swell comes from the southwest and west, with sizes ranging from around 3ft (0.9m) to 8ft (2.4m). It works at various tides, but you'll want to hit it during low to mid tides for the best conditions; at high tide, the backwash can become a hassle and it tends to close out when the swells are big. The bottom is sand, making it pretty mellow for beginners, but be ready for the crowds and a bit of localism in the water.

When it comes to wind conditions, it’s best to surf when the wind is coming from the east or northeast. The spot tends to handle various swell directions, including south, southwest, and west, making it versatile across different seasons. However, it’s worth noting that conditions are generally better from autumn through spring (September to March), especially when there’s a larger swell. There isn’t much parking available, so plan ahead if you're driving in for a session.
