Dunes is a surf spot that you’ll find over a sand-covered reef, making it a decent place to catch some waves. It works on all tides, so no need to stress too much about timing. The access is moderate, so you might have to do a bit of walking, but it shouldn't be too much of a hassle. The vibe here is generally mellow, perfect for a laid-back surf session. You can expect minimal crowds, which is a plus if you're looking to enjoy some space in the water.
The surf at Dunes mainly offers both left and right waves, which can get good and hollow depending on the sandbars, swell, and wind conditions. It's a beach break that handles swell sizes from around 3 feet (1 meter) to about 7 feet (2.1 meters). Ideal conditions come with swells from the South to the West, including SouthSouthEast, SouthSouthWest, and WestNorthWest. For the best experience, the preferable wind directions are NorthEast, EastNorthEast, East, and EastSouthEast. This spot suits various skill levels from beginners to experts, and it’s a good option for a variety of board types, including shortboards, funboards, longboards, and even bodyboards.
Although the waves can be fun, the overall quality is sometimes below average, making it a good spot for beginners to practice without too much pressure. Be mindful of rips in the area, as they can catch you off guard. You can find waves year-round here, but the prime time is usually from September to November.
