Baja Malibu surf guide

Baja Malibu is a solid surf spot located just a quick drive from San Diego. With its long stretch of beach, it offers a range of waves that can be fun for surfers of different skill levels. While it's known for being one of Baja's better surf locations, conditions can vary quite a bit. There are times when it can produce some incredible waves, especially during the winter months, but there are also days when the surf isn’t much to write home about.

This beach loves a solid NW swell, and the best combo tends to be a mix of NW and SSW swells. When the stars align and the surf is firing, waves can reach anywhere from 4ft to 10ft (1.2m to 3m). The bottom is sandy, which makes it a bit easier on your boards compared to rocky spots. Typically, the wind from the ESE to NE can help groom the waves, but it’s crucial to watch out for onshore winds, as they can ruin the session quickly. Overall, you can expect medium paddling difficulty, but it can get tough if you find yourself in the impact zone on bigger days.

Access to Baja Malibu is straightforward, so finding a parking spot isn't usually a hassle. However, be prepared for crowds, especially when the surf is good; things can get a little intense out there. Expect a mix of local riders, and keep in mind the vibe can be a bit aggressive at times, particularly from some of the American homeowners in the area. The best time to surf here is from October to January, but there are often fun waves year-round for those willing to check it out.
