Granite Bay surf guide

Granite Bay is a surf spot that can offer some decent waves but isn't exactly known for consistent perfection. The area relies heavily on sand formations joining the rocks, which can lead to a bit of a mixed bag when it comes to quality. While it can handle swells from the East, NorthEast, and SouthEast, it's important to note that it might not reach the same level as other nearby points, especially when there’s an East wind blowing. Be prepared for a more gruntier experience here with more water movement going on, particularly in bigger swells.

The surf at Granite Bay is generally best for intermediate surfers. It can handle swell sizes starting from about 1 foot (0.3 meters) and can provide both left and right waves, with the right breaks being more common. Typically, the best conditions are seen at low to mid tide, particularly when the wind is coming from the SouthWest. You might find some walled sections in the initial part of the waves, which can be fun for shortboarders. However, as the wave moves further into deeper water, it tends to shoulder off, so don’t expect too much in terms of ride length.

Getting to the water can be a bit of a trek, especially since the low tide jump-in spot is at Picnic Cove. The walk might drain some of your energy before you even catch a wave, so keep that in mind. Also, the rip can pick up in bigger swells, making it a bit challenging when conditions get strong. Just make sure to save some strength for the walk back after your session.
