Point Cartwright is a scenic surf spot located at the northern end of Mooloolaba, known for its picturesque headland and reliable waves. The area is sheltered from southern winds, making it an attractive option for surfers looking to enjoy a solid session. The break is situated near the eastern breakwall of the Mooloolaba Inlet, providing different wave conditions worth checking out.
The surf at Point Cartwright is primarily a right point break that works best with swells coming from the southeast. It can handle swell sizes of around 1 meter to 3.6 meters (3ft to 12ft) and breaks over an uneven reef and sand. Confident surfers can enjoy thick walls that create throwing barrels at take-off, but be aware that it's more suitable for expert surfers due to its challenges. The ideal wind direction is southwest, and it works well at all tide heights—just keep in mind that it can get heavy, especially further out. On a big northeast swell combined with a south wind, the inside bay can produce some close-out barrels, but generally, it's a good spot for learning if you're making your way towards Mooloolaba Beach.
Since Point Cartwright is a rivermouth break, it's essential to be cautious of boat traffic when crossing from town. The beach is netted, ensuring no reported shark attacks since 1959. You can drive to La Balsa Park or take a walk in from the Kawana Pocket side to enjoy the surf here.
