Pin Cushion is a surf spot located behind the caravan park next to the Maroochy river mouth. It’s often overlooked compared to the busier areas in Maroochydore, making it a decent choice if you want to escape the crowds. The spot is mainly a beachbreak, with sand as the bottom, and it has some nice waves when the conditions are right.
This spot works best with a south-east swell, but it can also handle north-east swells. You can expect decent waves when the swell is around 1ft (0.3m). The waves break on both the left and right, which is great for all levels, especially beginners. Low, mid, and high tides are all doable here, but if the winds are from the south-west, you’ll have smoother sessions with better conditions.
Since it's a beachbreak, you’ll find it important to keep an eye on the tides and wind direction for the best experience. It’s less crowded than some other spots in the area, which can make for a nice, laid-back surf session. Just remember, the biggest crowds are found in the main town, so you might want to stick around Pin Cushion for a quieter vibe.
