Kahuku surf guide

Kahuku, specifically the 7th Hole, is located off the 7th hole of the Kahuku Golf Course, close to the North Shore at the start of the Windward Side. This surf spot delivers both left and right waves when the conditions are right, making it a versatile choice for surfers. There's usually surf year-round due to the consistent tradeswell, but expect the conditions to be choppy from persistent onshore trade winds, especially during the summer. The best surfing tends to happen with winter north to northeast swells paired with offshore winds, which can be hit or miss. When the conditions align, 7th Hole is known for its long rides and the occasional barrel, though catching it perfect is a rarity.

The surf here can handle swell sizes from about 5ft (1.5 meters) to 10ft (3 meters). The waves break over a reef and are identified as both right and left. For optimal surfing, wind from the south to the west (including directions like southwest and west) is preferred. Tides that work well range from low to mid, mid, and mid to high. Though most surfers here will find it suitable for intermediate and expert levels, it's worth noting that the spot can be mellow most of the time. When it’s on, though, a medium skill level is recommended, particularly due to the deep and sometimes sharky channel that separates the waves.

Accessing the spot is pretty straightforward; just cross the golf course around the 7th hole. The crowd factor is usually low, but expect more company on weekends or during days when conditions improve. The local vibe generally stays mellow, so be respectful and keep the stoke high. Be aware of the reef, urchins, sharks, and currents while out there. The winter months often deliver the best swells, but you can find surf at Kahuku throughout the year thanks to its exposure to the easterly tradeswell.
