Pipeline & Backdoor is one of the most famous surf spots in the world, located on the North Shore of Oahu. It's known for its stunning waves and lively surfing scene. The spot explodes off a rocky, uneven reef about 80 meters offshore, attracting surfers from all over. While it can offer some incredible rides, it’s not always a guaranteed swell. During summer months, the waves can disappear, and you wouldn't even know it's there unless you’re in the know. When the right swell hits, though, Pipeline comes alive and draws in surfers looking to test their skills.
Pipeline works best with a WNW to NW swell and is known to handle sizes from 1 meter (3 feet) all the way up to 4.5 meters (15 feet). The left at Pipe provides a hollow, barreling wave, while Backdoor, the right, offers a different experience but can be equally as challenging. The waves usually break over a reef, demanding skill and respect. The best tide to surf is usually around low, mid, or high, and conditions are optimal with light E to SE winds. Make sure you're aware that this spot is for experts only, as it requires a good understanding of reef breaks and the local vibes, which can get pretty intense.
Access is pretty straightforward with Ehukai Beach Park right there offering parking, but be ready for heavy crowds when the surf is firing. The dynamic of the place changes quickly, and having humility and respect for the locals is a must. Surfboards like shortboards, bodyboards, and guns are preferred here. Keep in mind that when conditions aren’t ideal, like when sand builds up, Pipeline can turn into a gnarly closeout, so timing your visits is key. This spot truly showcases the raw power of nature and is definitely a must-ride for serious surfers.
