Off-The-Wall, also known as Kodak Reef, is a well-known surf spot located just slightly west of Backdoor and Pipeline. This spot has been a favorite among surfers and photographers for decades. It offers a challenging experience due to its high quality waves, but it's often super-crowded, especially during peak season. Access is pretty straightforward; you can use the Ehukai Beach Park parking lot or find authorized parking along Kam Highway.
The surfing here is notable for its wedging right that really comes alive in slightly overhead NW swells, typically handling sizes from about 5ft to 8ft (1.5m to 2.4m). You might also find some smaller lefts peeling back towards Backdoor, but don’t get your hopes up too much as the crowds can make it tough to catch a wave. The best time to go is during mid-tide with calm or light to moderate wind coming from the East. Expect hollow and fast waves when it’s on, but keep in mind that it’s a reef break and that can make paddling back out a bit tricky.
The local vibe requires humility and respect, so keep that in mind when you’re out there. While the water is generally beautiful and clear, this break is best suited for expert surfers due to the shallow reef and fast conditions. It’s a spot for shortboards, bodyboards, and bodysurfing, making it pretty versatile, but it's not for the fainthearted. The winter months tend to bring the best swells, so that's when you can expect more action.
