Makarori Point is located just east of Gisborne and is known for its long, meandering righthander. It's a decent spot for surfers of all skill levels, especially beginners looking to gain some experience. The beach offers a nice vibe, and you’ll find a mix of surfers enjoying the waves. Parking is easy with multiple carparks along the beach, so you can pick the spot that suits you best.
The surf here works best with a Northeast swell, but it can handle swells coming from the South as well. When the swell is around 2ft (0.6m), the waves break over a mix of uneven reef and sand. You'll find that Makarori Point has some slower walls, making it a favorite for longboarders and cruisers. As conditions change, especially with NE-E swells, those walls can get a bit faster with some hollower sections that pack more punch. For optimal surfing, you’ll want to catch it on low to mid tide, and northwest winds will give you the best conditions. Just be prepared for a bit of a paddle out, as it can be a lengthy one.
The atmosphere at Makarori Point can get busy, particularly with the longboard crowd known for their drop-ins. Always keep an eye out for patches of rock that can be tricky at low tide. Despite the crowd, the various peaks along the beach provide decent options to find your own space. Whether you’re just starting out or looking to improve, Makarori Point offers a mixed bag of surf to enjoy.
