Surf: Some say Wainui (not to be mistaken for Raglan’s Wainui Beach) is New Zealand’s most consistent beachbreak/reef with no less than five sections: Whales and Chalet to the north draw in S swell, while Pines in front of the surf club, Schools and the primo spot Stock Route all prefer more E in the swell. Wainui handles more size than most beachbreaks and gets very heavy and hollow, consistently offering the best shape and consistency on the east coast. Directions: From Gisborne town centre drive east on Wainui Road Highway 35, through Kaiti and past the sponge bay turnoff, to Wainui. park down one of the side streets with beach acces or at the surf club depending which peak you want to surf. Wainui has several peaks down the beach, Whales at the north end, then pines out front of the surf club, schools out front of wainui school, and stock route down the south end of Wainui beach. Environment: Plenty of peaks spread the regular crowds. Intermediate spot as the waves con be fast and powerful with some rips.
