Maycocks is located on the northwest side of Barbados. It's a spot that requires some specific conditions to really work well. You’ll need North to North-Northwest swells to get the best waves out there. When those swells are hitting right, you can expect a long, lined-up right that may have some barrel sections depending on the size and direction of the swell as well as the tide. This spot generally works best on lower tides.
The wave starts far up the reef, which can be too fast to ride initially. After that, it enters the takeoff section, slowing down just right so you can catch it. As the wave bends into the bay, you'll find a long, clean speed line, thanks to the offshore easterly trade winds. The waves here can reach sizes from 4 feet (about 1.2 meters) up to 8 feet (around 2.4 meters), making it suitable for intermediate and expert surfers. The preferred wind directions are East to North-East, and the bottom is made up of reef. You’ll want to ride shortboards or longboards here, depending on your style.
Getting to Maycocks involves a bit of driving. From the west coast, head north past St. Charles condos, then make a left. After passing the cement plant, take another left, followed by one more left after the bakery. Park beside the road and hike down one of the paths to reach the beach. The crowd factor is usually low, which makes for a mellow local vibe. However, be careful when navigating up and down the cliff as it can be tricky.
