Playa Esterillos surf guide

Playa Esterillos is one of the last spots in Costa Rica that's still hanging on to its less developed vibe, though recent construction is changing things up a bit. Esterillos Oeste offers a wide range of waves, making it suitable for everyone from beginners to advanced surfers. The beach faces south and features bits of reef mixed with sandy stretches, opening up into miles of beach break. When conditions are good, you'll find several A-frame peaks lighting up, attracting surfers from all around.

The waves at Esterillos are shaped by a combination of sandbars and pieces of reef. As the tide comes in and out, one peak might get flat while another pops up nearby. It's not uncommon to see locals switching from paddling on a reef to catching a sand bottom wedge without going far. This spot changes quickly, so knowing the lay of the land is key. On the northwest end, some reefs offer mellow rides, ideal for longboarders looking for long glides. During swell season, from May to October, bigger waves emerge, and some surfers even try tow surfing at the outside reefs.

Esterillos Oeste works best on mid-to-high tides and is known for producing hollow A-frame peaks, especially at the spot called El Pico. On decent days, it can serve up a perfect combo of waves. Crowds can vary, but with enough peaks around, there’s space to spread out. The local vibe is laid-back; respect goes a long way in the water. If you venture south from Esterillos Centro to Bejuco, you’ll find more beach breaks that offer their own unique conditions. Just be aware that during big swells, the waves can get fierce enough to create some tricky currents, so it's a good idea to know your stuff before you hit the water.
