Ponta do Pargo is located on the westernmost point of the island and is known for its challenging access and unique surf conditions. This spot was first surfed by Portuguese surfers like To Gama, Tiago Oliveira, and Miguel Fortes. Since then, it has seen limited attention from surfers due to its tough reach. The only easy way to get there is by boat from locations like Paul do Mar, Calheta, or Porto Moniz. Be prepared for a bit of a challenge if you decide to check it out.
The surf at Ponta do Pargo can handle big swells, especially when coming from the Northwest and West. It can work well with swell sizes up to about 10 feet (3 meters). The waves typically break over boulders and there are right-hand point waves to ride. Low to mid tides are best for surfing here, and some preferred wind directions are East, which helps keep the conditions clean. It's important to note that this spot is suited for expert surfers, so make sure you're up for the challenge.
Accessing Ponta do Pargo is definitely not for everyone. The trail down the steep cliffs is treacherous and difficult to find, making it a spot best enjoyed by those who are fit and ready for an adventure. If you’re keen on checking the conditions before heading down, you can get a good view from the lighthouse, which is about 500 meters above the surf. This spot has the advantage of handling a strong East wind, which can blow out other spots on the south shore, so it can be worth a look when other places are not holding up.
