Refugio State Beach surf guide

Refugio State Beach is a popular surf spot located on the central coast of California. It features a beautiful beach setting with a campground nearby, making it a favorite getaway for surfers, campers, and families. The vibe here is laid-back, but it can get pretty crowded, especially with longboarders looking to catch some mellow waves. The area is known for its scenic views, but don't expect world-class surf every day.

The surf at Refugio is mostly right-point waves that break over sand, which makes it ideal for beginners and longboarders. The best conditions usually happen when there's a larger winter swell or good southwest direction. The optimal swell direction is from the southwest, but it can also handle some north swells. Expect to see waves as small as 1 ft (0.3 m), but they can be rideable at all tides, with low and high tides offering the best conditions. There are some rocks on the outside near the point, so be careful out there. Rides can be long, and you might find a speedy section on the inside. Sometimes, a good sandbar forms that’s shortboardable, but generally, the waves are mushy and not very powerful.

Most surfers come here to hang out and have fun, but it's important to note that the consistency can be a bit medium. If you're looking for a chill day on the water, this is a good spot, especially for beginners getting their feet wet. Just remember that it might not always be the best surf, so check the conditions before heading out.
