Sama Sama's surf guide

Sama Sama's is a surf spot located near Ternate, and it’s known for being the closest reliable wave to the area. The spot is surrounded by stunning scenery, including smoking volcanoes and lush jungle-covered cliffs. It showcases a picturesque bay where surfers can catch some waves, particularly when a stronger swell rolls in. The vibe here is laid-back, and it’s a spot where local surfers hang out.

This spot generally handles swell sizes from about 2 feet (0.6 meters) and works best with north swell directions and can be good with northwest and northeast swells too. When it’s on, the waves break over live coral and offer rights that can peel for about two or three turns before closing out in the channel section. It's best to ride this break during low, mid, or high tide, but keep in mind that the conditions can change quickly with the tide. Just make sure you're at least at an intermediate level to navigate the reef safely.

You’ll often find local groms from the nearby Susupu village ripping on wooden bellyboards, using a simple 4-inch nail as a handle, which adds a unique local flavor to the scene. If you’re looking for some fun and you’re in the area, Sama Sama's can be worth a visit, especially when the waves are doing their thing.
